Top 10 cash game NLHE session

Last night, I received a reward for slogging through the doldrums - a session where I made north of 150,000 play dollars. That clocked in at number 5 on my all time list. The last time I had a top 10 cash game NLHE session before that was way back on September 5th, 2014. Here are the top 10:

$262,204  2014-07-02
$209,400  2012-06-30
$209,008  2014-07-04

$144,895  2014-04-11
$144,816  2014-02-05

Only time will tell if this is the start of something big, or just a blip on the radar.

During current Hold'em session you were dealt 97 hands and saw flop:
 - 10 out of 12 times while in big blind (83%)
 - 7 out of 14 times while in small blind (50%)
 - 29 out of 71 times in other positions (40%)

A brutal way to go

When you're heads up after the flop against a single opponent, there are 990 different ways the remainder of the community cards can fall. The worst situation you can be in at this point is to be drawing dead. The next worst is when just a single one of the 990 combinations enables you to win. That's the situation I was in on the final hand of last night's session. I'd been dealt a big slick, but my opponent had been dealt pocket rockets. The flop came 2h Ks As, giving me top two pair, and my opponent a set of aces. I got all in after a brief raising war. The only combination which allowed me to win was running kings. The turn was Tc, so I was drawing dead on the river. Man, that hurt.

During current Hold'em session you were dealt 141 hands and saw flop:
 - 6 out of 17 times while in big blind (35%)
 - 9 out of 18 times while in small blind (50%)
 - 46 out of 106 times in other positions (43%)

Shot from guns

On Thursday night, I had another shot from guns session. As a reminder, that's a cash game session where I win the first hand. It was my first such session since September 24th of last year. As it happens, winning the first hand of a session is quite a good predictor of it being a winning session. Of my 160 shot from guns sessions, 119 of them have been winning ones (including Thursday night's).

During current Hold'em session you were dealt 80 hands and saw flop:
 - 7 out of 11 times while in big blind (63%)
 - 5 out of 11 times while in small blind (45%)
 - 25 out of 58 times in other positions (43%)

Third worst cash game NLHE three bagger ever

I'm definitely in the poker doldrums. I hit the felt once more last night, on hand 85. It was another one of those "always going broke" hands. That is, I did nothing wrong, and would play the hand the same way every time; I just got unlucky. My last three sessions comprise my third worst cash game NLHE three bagger ever; here are the top 10:

   $-416,843 2013-06-11 2013-06-13 (0)
   $-332,638 2013-06-12 2013-06-14 (0)

   $-224,410 2014-12-11 2014-12-13 (1)

The only thing to do in these doldrum situations is to sit tight and ride them out.

During current Hold'em session you were dealt 131 hands and saw flop:
 - 15 out of 22 times while in big blind (68%)
 - 14 out of 21 times while in small blind (66%)

Silver lining

With a blog post title like this one, it's pretty easy to guess that I didn't have a winning session last night. The silver lining was that although I hit the felt on hand 36, I was able recoup much of my losses after reupping. Tonight, for a change, I'm going to buy in for the maximum. Maybe that will change my luck :-)

During current Hold'em session you were dealt 97 hands and saw flop:
 - 4 out of 10 times while in big blind (40%)
 - 8 out of 13 times while in small blind (61%)
 - 33 out of 74 times in other positions (44%)

Second worst cash game NLHE session ever

The title of this post says it all. Actually, not quite all :-) What it doesn't get across is the fact that you don't have to be playing really badly in order to have a really bad session. When I assessed the damage after last night's session, I couldn't believe I'd lost that much. When I looked at the bar chart of my stack size over the course of the session, I discovered just three whopping losses, in a marathon session of 154 hands. Even though I lost so much money, I only hit the felt once. That I didn't hit the felt multiple times was the result of a fingerfehler I made at one point which resigned my seat, so I had to join a different table. Another mistake I made was to reup with a starting stack of $100,000, instead of my usual $40,000.

During current Hold'em session you were dealt 154 hands and saw flop:
 - 35 out of 45 times while in big blind (77%)
 - 32 out of 45 times while in small blind (71%)
 - 22 out of 64 times in other positions (34%)

Extremely rare double up

The most memorable hand of last night's session was one where I was able to double up without going all in. In 61,380 cash game no limit hold'em hands for which I have the hand histories, I've only achieved this feat 49 times. Friends and neighbors, that's .0798 percent of the time. Of course, the only way to do this is to have more than one opponent come along with you. They don't have to stick around all the way to showdown, but they do have to contribute heavily to the pot along the way.

During current Hold'em session you were dealt 86 hands and saw flop:
 - 8 out of 15 times while in big blind (53%)
 - 6 out of 13 times while in small blind (46%)
 - 21 out of 58 times in other positions (36%)

Mirror image session

Last night's session was essentially a mirror image of the one before it. I lost almost the exact amount that I'd won in the earlier session. Both sessions were long - over one hundred hands. I went all in four times, and won all four of those hands. My biggest loss came on hand 54, when I ran into pocket aces. I lost $27,632, but since my "percent at river" number was a healthy 85.96, I don't think I misplayed the hand.

During current Hold'em session you were dealt 149 hands and saw flop:
 - 16 out of 27 times while in big blind (59%)
 - 18 out of 31 times while in small blind (58%)
 - 32 out of 91 times in other positions (35%)

The all in enigma

I cannot forecast to you the action of Russia. It is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma ...

Winston Churchill, in a 1939 radio broadcast
(source: Wiktionary)

I find the all in maneuver in poker as enigmatic as Winston Churchill found Russia. For all intents and purposes, you almost never want to go all in. And yet, you only make a profit (or at least, I only make a profit) by doing so. Here are the numbers:

$-3,599,326: career cash game no limit hold'em aggregate delta when I don't go all in
$8,799,594: career cash game no limit hold'em aggregate delta when I do go all in

If I never went all in, I'd be losing play money hand over fist. Since I do allow myself to go all in on occasion, I'm making a fairly comfortable living playing play money poker. The trick is not to go all in often, but to have great all in radar; you should only go all in when you have a high percentage of winning.

Since returning to cash games, I've gone all in twice, and won both times.

During current Hold'em session you were dealt 129 hands and saw flop:
 - 9 out of 16 times while in big blind (56%)
 - 5 out of 16 times while in small blind (31%)
 - 48 out of 97 times in other positions (49%)
 - a total of 62 out of 129 (48%)

A profitable loss

On Wednesday night, in my return to cash games, I failed to have a winning session. Nevertheless, it met my criteria for a profitable loss :-) That is to say, I took a bad beat on the hand where I lost the most money, and if I'd won that hand, I would have made a profit. How can that be profitable, you might ask. My answer is that the bad beat proves I was playing well, and if I keep playing that way, I'm bound to turn a profit.

During current Hold'em session you were dealt 123 hands and saw flop:
 - 4 out of 15 times while in big blind (26%)
 - 5 out of 17 times while in small blind (29%)
 - 30 out of 91 times in other positions (32%)

Time to pull the ripcord

I'm facing up to the facts. It's time to pull the ripcord. I need to jettison sit and gos and return to cash games. It's a shame, since I really like playing sit and gos. The problem is that there's just no profit in them, at least for me. Cash games have always been profitable for me over the long term, so I need to return to them. This means I won't be able to achieve the goal I set myself of wagering 60 million play dollars in 2016, but I did manage to wager more play money this year than in any previous year - over 25 million play dollars.

Hijacked attention

This is the second time I've used this blog post title. The first was on November 21, 2013. Now, as then, it refers to the odd experience of completely forgetting I'm playing poker after becoming engrossed in watching a video in another window on my laptop. I start out by multitasking reliably, but at some point I get utterly derailed. Actually, it's more accurate to say that the success of my multitasking depends almost entirely on the ability of the PokerStars software to thrust the PokerStars window to the foreground whenever it's my turn to act. Every now and then, through some quirk, that foreground thrust fails, and that's when it's up to me to remember that I'm playing poker :-)

There's a pretty steep price to pay for getting your attention highjacked while playing a sit and go. The PokerStars software will automatically sit you out, and you'll eventually be blinded out of the tournament. Last night, two of my three second places were caused by highjacked attention. For the record, the show I was binge watching is a highly entertaining Amazon original series called "Catastrophe" :-)

Never worse session

It's nice to have an ever better session. I guess the next best thing is to have a never worse session. That's when, in each tournament you enter, you place the same as or better than you placed in the tournament before. Last night, I had a never worse session. I'd decided before play began that I was going to play for higher stakes. I'm going to give the $100,000 tournaments a spin for a while.

Sleeping into the money

Last night, I started playing poker quite late, when I was very tired. I only played two sit and gos. Perhaps I should say I only played one sit and go, since I kept nodding off during the second one. I'd keep waking up to notice that the software had sat me out; I'd then click the "I'm back" button, and promptly nod off once more. Somehow I was lucky enough to sleep my way into the money :-) The only way this was possible was for one of my two opponents when we got to three-handed play to make a very foolish call in (i.e., call of a big bet which put him all in). I had so few chips when I got to heads up play that I didn't even have enough for the ante. Not surprisingly, I only lasted a single heads up hand. Another interesting feature of the second sit and go, besides the fact that I slept through most of it, was that I'd mistakenly chosen a higher buy in than my normal one, so I actually made a profit on the night (when I otherwise wouldn't have).

The truth about aces

In less than half a year, I will have been playing online poker for eight years. So you'll forgive me if I assert that I'm somewhat of an expert on the subject of poker. The title of this post is what's known as clickbait. I can honestly say, after playing poker all these years, that I still don't know the truth about aces. That's a testament to their mystery and elusiveness. Aces in poker are like gods; they giveth and they taketh away. You never know what aces will do. Last night, on just the fifth hand of the first sit and go I played, they tooketh away :-(

Apockalypse now

There are certain situations which arise at a poker table when everyone who stays in the hand more than willingly puts all their chips into the middle. Every so often such a hand shows up on a televised poker show. The hand which escorted me out of the third sit and go I played last night was worthy of such a broadcast. Here's how it went down: I was dealt Qs Qd, an opponent was dealt Qh Qc, and a second opponent was dealt Jc Js. In other words, it was pocks vs. pocks vs. pocks. Apockalypse now! We all went all in preflop. The flop came 5d 4h 2c, the turn was Ah, and the river was a dagger through the heart - the jack of hearts. Running the numbers, before the flop I had a 2.04% chance of winning the hand, a 21.02% chance of losing it, and a 76.14% chance of chopping the pot. Once again, it was a case of a hand which just wasn't meant to be.

Double bubble

Last night's session began with a double bubble - two third places in a row. It improved from that point on, but not enough to enable me to make a profit. I've now had four losing sessions in a row. Also, my 2016 overall balance has dipped into the red. However, all is not bad news, as I discovered when I broke out the year by style and flavor:

Mauvais quatorze

I've never lost 14 sit and go tournaments in a row. That said, on ten separate occasions,  I've lost 13 out of 14. The most recent occasion was last night. To be clear, I didn't play all 14 sit and gos of this latest "mauvais quatorze" last night, but the four I did play completed it. My net delta in this stretch is $-607,600.

Out of curiosity, I researched what my longest sit and go losing streak is. The answer is ten. My current sit and go losing streak stands at six. I'm just barely net positive on the year, with a 2016 net balance of $53,901. Time to get on my horse!

A frenzy of jacks

Pocket pairs (or pocks, as they're familiarly called) are more memorable than any other holding. When you get dealt the same pocket pair multiple times in a tournament (or in a cash game, for that matter), it never fails to make a strong impression. I've told you before about a blizzard of snowmen. I've told you before about a hurricane of queens. I'm here to tell you now about a frenzy of jacks :-) Contrary to what you might expect, the frenzy didn't occur last night. In fact, it occurred more than a week ago. Nonetheless, the frenzy stuck in my mind and I looked it up tonight. In a stretch of just 39 hands, I was dealt pocket jacks 3 times. That means they were getting dealt to me at 17 times their normal frequency. Thanks in part to that frantic pace, I came in second in that tournament. In other news, my poker doldrums continued last night.

Nine the hard way

The title of this post is a little joke. There's no such thing as nine the hard way :-) In craps, eight the hard way is double fours. It's hard because there's only one way to roll it. It's easier to roll a total of eight in any other combination, since each of them has two ways.

What do I mean by nine the hard way? It's my shorthand for hitting the rail at a sit and go, in a very painful way, after only nine hands. That's what happened to me last night, in the first sit and go I entered. On hand 1, I knocked out one of my opponents to double up. On hand 5, I lost half my stack to a second opponent. On hand 9, I lost the other half to the same opponent. Ouch!

Nil below 50

On Friday night, I repeated a feat I'd only accomplished once before - namely, playing four sit and gos and lasting at least 50 hands in each. That helped me make the money three times, and end up with a nice profit. I also played an MTT 8-game, but fared miserably in it.

Final first

It's never a bad idea to leave on a high note. When the poker style is sit and go, this means quitting after coming in first. It doesn't have to be your first first of the session; it just needs to be your last :-) Last night, I had another final first session; it was the 91st of my career. It was also the 139th session where I made a profit of at least $100,000.

$-1,024,500 2012-07-21
  $-600,000 2015-06-16

The good news, such as it is, is that I'm still net positive on the year.

Yet another lonesome deuce

Last night, I had yet another lonesome deuce - a session in which I played multiple sit and gos and had only a single second place to show for it. It was the 51st such session of my career. I've had 36 lonesome aces.

Double deuce

Last night, I came in second twice in four sit and gos. A double deuce, in other words :-) If there were no such things as entry fees, I would have made a profit of $10,000. Instead, I lost $15,200, plus another $5,000 on an MTT 8-game I played. The way I look at it, though, losing $20,200 on a night where I wagered $205,000 isn't bad at all. It's essentially breaking even, looked at with just the barest hint of a squint :-)

When 99.5% is no good

In last night's session, I made 414 decisions. 2 of them were, objectively, very bad ones. That means that 412 of them, or 99.55%, did not qualify as being very bad. Most of them actually qualifed as good or very good. However, the good decisions I made were all for naught. The hard truth is that in poker, the number of good decisions you make doesn't matter if you make bad decisions often enough. I need to get back on top of my game.

Deep six

It's never fun to come in sixth (i.e., last) in a sit and go. It's even less fun when that happens immediately after you've had a first place finish. I hereby dub such an occurrence a deep six. On Friday night, my session started off with a deep six and didn't improve after that.
