Hijacked attention

This is the second time I've used this blog post title. The first was on November 21, 2013. Now, as then, it refers to the odd experience of completely forgetting I'm playing poker after becoming engrossed in watching a video in another window on my laptop. I start out by multitasking reliably, but at some point I get utterly derailed. Actually, it's more accurate to say that the success of my multitasking depends almost entirely on the ability of the PokerStars software to thrust the PokerStars window to the foreground whenever it's my turn to act. Every now and then, through some quirk, that foreground thrust fails, and that's when it's up to me to remember that I'm playing poker :-)

There's a pretty steep price to pay for getting your attention highjacked while playing a sit and go. The PokerStars software will automatically sit you out, and you'll eventually be blinded out of the tournament. Last night, two of my three second places were caused by highjacked attention. For the record, the show I was binge watching is a highly entertaining Amazon original series called "Catastrophe" :-)
