The streak is dead. Long live the streak!

When I first heard the phase "The king is dead. Long live the king!" it made no sense to me. How can the king live a single day, let alone a long time, when he's dead? Of course, the answer is that the phrase refers to two different kings. So you'll understand that when I say "The streak is dead. Long live the streak!" I'm referring to two different streaks.

This is an excerpt from my March 31, 2012 post. The streak that died yesterday was my dynamic duo streak. I played two tournaments, fulfilling the first of the two requirements for a dynamic duo, but failed to fulfill the second, namely, making the money in at least one of the tournaments. I'll try to start a new streak today :-)

The streak is dead. Long live the streak!

The baseline for competence in an MTT NLHE tournament is outlasting the late registration period. If you do that, you're guaranteed to receive an official place at the moment you hit the rail, regardless of whether or not you made the money. If you don't do that, you receive the dreaded double dash instead. I equate that to a 0th place. Pretty shameful. I hate getting 0th places.

This is an excerpt from my April 28, 2020 post. Last night, I received a 0th place. That ended a streak of 29 straight tournaments where I received an official place. The streak is dead. Long live the streak :-)

When I hit the rail, fully 18 minutes remained in the late registration period. To add insult to injury, my holding on the last hand was a premium one - AKs (ace king suited). Ouch!

The streak is dead. Long live the streak!

I first used this blog post title on March 31st, 2012. Here's an excerpt of what I had to say:

I'm hoping to start a new winning streak tonight.

Last night, my pure ITM streak ended at six. I had high hopes of extending it to seven, but hit the rail when my two pair lost to a rivered straight. Time to start a new streak :-)

The streak is dead. Long live the streak!

This is the third time I've used this blog post title. Last night's tournament ended my streak of tournaments where I hit the rail with a premium hand, at 5 straight. That's the longest such streak I've ever had in my MTT-R NLHE career. That said, it's the kind of streak you don't really want to be on :-)

I first used this blog post title on March 31st, 2012. Here's an excerpt of what I wrote then:

On Wednesday night, my streak of 11 straight winning sessions came to an end. It started during my "These are the good old days" run, when I amassed over $2,000,000 in just 10 sessions. What makes this streak notable is that I played sit and gos exclusively while it lasted. It's much easier to win a cash game session than a sit and go one. My longest prior sit and go winning streak was a mere 5 sessions.

The streak is dead. Long live the streak!

Last night, the longest winning streak of my career came to an end. At 29 straight winning sessions, it was longer than my previous two longest streaks put together. It was so long, it started when I was still looking for a new job, was going strong when I received a job offer, and almost made it to the first day of my new job, which will be this coming Monday.

Call me egotistical, but at some point during the streak I started thinking to myself, "This must be how Joe Dimaggio felt when he was on his 56-game hitting streak." I felt like I could do no wrong, and that the streak would last forever.

When I first heard the phase "The king is dead. Long live the king!" it made no sense to me. How can the king live a single day, let alone a long time, when he's dead? During current Hold'em session you were dealt 159 hands and saw flop:
- 18 out of 27 times while in big blind (66%)
- 19 out of 27 times while in small blind (70%)
- 63 out of 105 times in other positions (60%)
- a total of 100 out of 159 (62%)
Pots won at showdown - 8 of 22 (36%)
Pots won without showdown - 19
