Of course, Ted Williams was referring specifically to batting average. His statement may have been true at the time he came up with it, but nowadays it's no longer true. I can think of at least one other endeavor which fits this categorization - MTT 8-game poker. My current rate of making the money in this poker style and flavor is 36.05% (62 for 172). This is actually a winning percentage, at least for me.

It's definitely hard to feel successful with a percentage like this; my winning percentages in other poker style/flavor combos are much gaudier. However, that's not such a bad thing; it keeps me humble :-)
